“I just don’t understand it,” said head coach Mike Locksley to Big Ten Media when asked his thoughts on the Superbowl. “We showed grit and determination the whole season, we almost had a winning record, and to not even be considered? It’s disrespectful.” This followed after the National Football League’s Superbowl LX featured the New England Patriots vs. the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara, and notably, not the Maryland Terrapins.

Despite a rough season that ended with an eight-game losing streak, the Terrapins believed they were still competitive enough to win any given game. Imagine their distress when Sunday morning passed and they had yet to hear anything from the NFL. One anonymous player proudly proclaimed they had the “heart of a champion.” When our reporter brought up that the Terrapins finished 17th out of 18 teams in the Big Ten conference, the player retorted, “Well, we have never lost on a Sunday.” Our reporter tried to explain that college football teams only play on Fridays and Saturdays, but the player promptly exited the facility.

Also present at this media conference was Athletics Director James E. Smith, however he declined to give any comments after walking in and seemingly remembering Locksley was still employed at UMD. Someone who did speak to the media that day was true freshman quarterback, Malik Washington. “I was really disappointed when we weren’t asked to play,” he said. “I’m a huge Bad Bunny fan, I really wanted to dress up as one of the bushes in his show.” Washington would spend the next five minutes performing his own rendition of Bad Bunny’s hit song Chambea.

Looking forward to next season, the Terrapins will open up against the Howard Bison, UConn Huskies, and Virginia Tech Hokies, before playing B10 teams the rest of the way. The Hare’s official prediction for UMD’s record next season is 3–9, winning our first three games and extending our nation-leading win streak over nonconference opponents to 21–0, before losing out against actual competition for the rest of the season.

In the meantime, if you want to see the Terrapins actually win some games, we recommend watching the women’s basketball team. Their next home game is tonight, February 12th against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
