COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND – Yesterday, on April 1st, many University of Maryland students were shocked to find that their previously denied Accessibility and Disability Service (ADS) accommodations had just been approved.

“The truth is, most students with disabilities actually know their own needs far better than we do, so we decided it really isn’t worth arguing with them about accommodations,” said ADS counselor Abraham “Abe” Elist. “We genuinely want to help.”

Alongside these accommodation approvals, the university’s ADS office sent an announcement stating that they would ensure students get their testing accommodations with three days’ notice, as was their policy a few semesters ago, and that they would not punish students if their professors do not submit their exams to ADS on time. They also stated that they would work with construction crews on campus to ensure that there are accessible paths around campus, among several other improvements.

“ADS had never done anything to help disabled students at this school until now,” said theatre major Aidy H. Dee. “I thought it was a dream.”

It was, in fact, a dream. Kind of. On April 2nd, ADS announced that their previous approvals of accommodations were actually an April Fools’ prank. They immediately rescinded all of their April 1st decisions and even removed some accommodations that were approved prior for good measure.

ADS students seemed largely unsurprised by this April 2nd announcement. “This university has never cared about its disabled population,” said psychology student Karan Iklyill. “Honestly, ADS’s entire existence just feels like a prank.”

“Lmaoooooo got ’em,” added Elist after this announcement was released. “Those disabled students probably don’t even need the accommodations. Oh, you need extra time? Just focus harder.”
